From reading this and other forums I understand that foreigners have the best chance to find a job in the teaching industry. But as an IT software engineer with years of experience, what are the best places then to look for a job in Laos? Surely there must be IT jobs in Laos? :?

I think that in the next 5-10 years you will see more job openings appealing to foreigners in Laos. But as of right now opportunities seem rather limited. That said, a few minutes of google search lead me to this job opening which seems to be in the area of IT programming: ... esigner-2/

If you look hard enough I'm sure you will find something that matches your qualifications :)

There aren't many "white collar" jobs in Laos, mostly blue collar jobs if you know what I mean. Let me enlighten you about how jobs work in Laos. There are many graduates from the local universities in Laos. They have nothing better to do but go to school in hopes to get a good job. Sad reality is, there are no jobs for them when they come out. I've seen it first hand. So they end up as beer girls in the bars and restaurants while the guys find odd labor jobs. My ex-girlfriend from Laos showed me a pic of her friend one day on facebook who worked at the bank in Laos, and she was telling me how proud she was of him and I was like wtf he just works as a bank teller. Well in Laos to work at a bank is very prestigious since you have to pay about $5000 usd to the owner/manager just to get in. Yes you heard me right, you got to PAY to get the job. Then you got to work your way up which takes several years before you can finally say you are making money. Most people who work at the bank are sons/daughters of the owners of the bank, they only let their family in the business. It's not like a public corporation such as in the west, there are no equal opportunity employer laws. You got to know someone to get a job in Laos and to top it all off, even if you aren't qualified for the job, you can still get the position if you are family or related to the gov't somehow. So even a moron can work as an IT professional if he/she has the connections cause it's all about face there. Rich family with gov't connections always get the jobs. Even if you are smart in Laos, doesn't mean you will succeed, that is why the country is not able to move forward.
