Culture shock

Moving to a new country can be overwhelming and challenging for most of us. Did you experience the so called culture shock when you moved to Laos? How would you say it affected you, and did you find a way to cope with these cultural differences?

I would say the biggest culture shock to me was the slow pace of life here. Even in the larger cities like Vientiane things move incredibly slow - it even goes for the internet connection :-). But if you have spent time in neighbouring Thailand you may learn to appreciate how calm and peaceful things are in Laos. At times it still bothers me that most things here take so long to do. But deep inside I think this irritation is really a bad habit of mine I should get rid of

Overall I think that compared to other Asian countries, the culture shocks experienced in Laos are at a much smaller scale. Mainly due to the French influence shaping this country.
