Re: The Peace and Serenity of Laos

We had some creepy crawlies in the bungalow, but nothing too scary! I've had bigger bugs in my apartment I have now in Mexico. I don't know if I should have been worried about crocodiles. The first day we arrived there was a little girl swimming around without a care in the world. I am hoping her pa...

Re: Vegetarian in Laos

I recall having a decent pumpkin curry and being in LOVE with the baguettes.

I am sure it wouldn't be healthy, but I could have just eaten the bread and nothing else.

I agree. I was there in November / December and it was perfect!

Re: Safe for women to travel Laos?

Looking back I was VERY fortunate. However, other than the occasional inappropriate pick up line, I never felt like being a woman got me in trouble. If you do plan on drinking all the basic rules apply. Watch your drink, don't get heavily intoxicated (at least not without a sober friend watching you...

Re: English spoken percentage?

Like many other countries, if you are talking to someone involved in the hospitality industry, they will probably speak some English.

The Peace and Serenity of Laos

I just realized all I’ve posted about Laos are partially scary stories! Bribing my way across the border and being shoved into random vehicles weren’t my only Laotian experiences! I stayed with my friend in a bungalow literally on the water. There were hammocks outside, our big bed (well, I use bed ...

Re: The kindness of strangers

Very true! Looking back I feel very stupid that I allowed myself to be pushed from person to person, but in the end I am glad my faith in humanity pulled through and people cared enough to help me. The really cool part was, this wasn't a big deal. It wasn't as though we cried when we missed the bus....

The kindness of strangers

Have you ever had one of those days where looking back you realize how incredibly fortunate and stupid you were? After Don Det, Ashley and I had decided to head towards the North of Laos. We made it to mainland (via a 2 hour boat ride) to Pakse and found our way to the bus station. We needed to stay...

Re: Crossing to Laos from Cambodia

Everything I had read told me that it was only a "sometimes" event. Other sources said that it happened, but if you stuck to your guns and refused they would let you pass.

I don't know how unlucky I was, but it didn't seem they were going to let me pass without receiving a dollar first!

Crossing to Laos from Cambodia

The most exciting border crossing of my life happened in 2005 when I crossed to Laos from Cambodia! My friend Ashley and I had thoroughly read the Lonely Planet and felt completely prepared for the border crossing. Ashley and I had studied in Singapore together and had been backpacking around South ...
