Re: Guide on how to find work as a teacher in Laos

I'm not looking for a job in Laos myself. But I did enjoy reading the guide you link to. Very informative and straight to the point - a must read to those looking for a teaching job in Laos. Thanks :-)

Re: Types of visas?

Great overview of visa types; I have been looking for something like this actually :-) Oh, and I'm surprised to see there is a visa for those having family in Laos. But it's called a "Visit visa", where I would assume it is more like a permanent visa (to stay and provide for Lao family)?

What about a simple baguette - Lao style?

As a falang home can seem far away when travelling around Laos. But thanks to the French-Laos connection, vendors selling the well-known falang-friendly baguettes, are easily found on many street corners. The Lao people call the baguette "Khao Jee". Enjoy :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxsty7_vAVA

Re: Emergency phone numbers in Laos

I want to add the phone number for the Tourist Police, which is 192 . This is the number you want to use, if you don't speak Lao, and want an English speaking police officer on the line. I suppose this is the case for 99% of us big-nosed falangs ;) Oh yeah, I totally forgot about the Tourist Police...

Emergency phone numbers in Laos

Hi all

I thought I want to share with you, the emergency phone numbers in Laos. They can sometimes come in handy:

Police: 191
Ambulance: 195
Fire: 190

This is the Lao word for emergency: ສຸກເສີນ. I have no idea how to pronounce it :)

Re: Do Lao women look different from other Asians?

South East Asian women all look the same to me, so I'm not sure I can help you much with your question. I did find some interesting facts about Asian's average height though, which I would like to share with you. Here is the approximate average height of women in South East Asia divided into country...

Re: Laos New Year celebrations

@Phouvanay: It sounds like a pretty cool trip you had there ;) It must be exciting to experience first hand, which I assume is only possible if one actually has family relations in Laos, and not for a regular tourist like me :D

Laos New Year celebrations

Hi

Any of you out there who have had the pleasure of celebrating New Year in Laos? All I know is that this event is celebrated in April as in any other Buddhist country, but I'm currious about how this takes place from someone experiencing it first-hand.

Do they celebrate Christmas in Laos?

I know that Laos is a buddhist country, but do they celebrate Christmas in any way? I have seen pictures from Thailand, where they have Christmas trees and decorations in central Bangkok, and it seems the Thais have like to celebrate Christmas to some extend. I thought they might have something simi...
