What are your living expenses per month in Laos?

Postby brinch » Mon Jun 09, 2014 9:17 pm

Hi

I'm curious to learn what the living expenses are for those of you who live in Laos. Like how must do you spend each month on food, rent, insurance, utilities etc?
Best always!

hm.. I'm also curious ..
well, now .. Living alone in a small (really small) room at Dong Palane (I'd say quite a good location) for 3.000 baht.

utilities.. goes around 150.000 kip monthly (medium-sized fridge, 2 fans, and 1 laptop .. << tbh, I think it's a little bit expensive .. oh and also + eletric hot plate .. to cook things. .)
btw .., this room doesn't have hot water ..nor air-con :(

currently, I'm taking Lao Lessons (150 dollar per term - 2.5 months, and Korean Lessons 80 dollar per term - 2.5 months)...

eating outside .. cost on avg. 15.000 kip per meal .. though they're delicious, they don't suit 100% my taste, so I cook myself .. ( avg. 15.000 kip too ).

Internet - Beeline's 3G - 130.000 kip (month).
hmm phone ..recharge? .. maybe 10.000 kip a month .. ( I don't make a lot of calls ).

overall, my living expenses goes around 300-400 dollar month. ( what drains the most, are drinks .. << sometimes it's so hot that cold-water alone doesn't satisfy you .. )
Currently in a journey looking for cheap lessons about anything.. new language.. cooking.. sports.. martial arts.. psychic abilities.. dragon balls.. pokemons.. etc..

Me and my wife pay almost $550 per month for a 2 bedroom apartment in Vientiane (10 minutes from the city centre). The place is nothing fancy but comfortable and livable.

Electricity for Air-condition, hot water, fridge etc cost around $80 per month (my wife tells me :D ). We spend about $225-$250 a month on food and beverage, which may be more than the average person here spends, but I like to buy imported Western style ingredients now and then.

I think internet and phone cost me about $40 per month.

Health insurance is $100 a year (or $9/month) for the two of us.

All in all that would yield about $925-$950 per month.

I live in Bangkok, and just for comparison, a $1000 budget would be just enough to survive here! So sounds to me like you still get good value for your money in Vientiane ;)

You may know this already, but you are allowed to extend your tourist visa two times, giving you a total of 90 days. After 90 days just cross the border and return to repeat the process. A bit time consuming of course, but if you can accept that, you can stay here for one year ;)

Finding a good health insurance company is not easy in Laos. A friend of mine has been happy with AGL, but I'm not sure they're the cheapest on the market.

Very interesting to read. When I lived in Pakse last year, I think that I've spent about 600 USD a month. But it depends on quite some things I think.
