Dairy prices in Laos

Postby hansen » Fri May 08, 2015 5:41 pm

Any of you locals who know what dairy products like milk, cheese, butter and yoghurt cost in Laos? I would assume they're relatively expensive, but I could be wrong ;)

Dairy prices are generally pretty steep here in Laos, compared to prices in the West. Let's start with cheese; Local cheese is available for around $30 per kg (and even more expensive if it is imported). Cow milk you will find in most supermarkets for about $2.50-3.00 per liter, and 250g of butter should not cost you more than $4.50-5.00.

I don't know about yoghurt, as it's not something I normally buy.

By the way, Lao people don't fancy cheese, as they believe it gives the body a bad odor in the warm climate.

Funny thing with the cheese, but it makes sense. At least I know the reason, if Lao people don't want to sit next to us falangs then :D

Hmm...I eat cheese almost daily, and I have never heard any complaints from Asians. If it's just a mild cheese you eat, I don't see any "dangers" ;-)

I agree with you there. I wouldn't like to miss a bit of cheese once in a while.

Hi, I would like to know where I can get whole fresh milk in Laos.
It can be buffalo, goat or sheep. I am in the Vientiane area.
Thanks.
