Safe for women to travel Laos?

Postby AngelaW » Sat May 03, 2014 12:51 am

Hi board members!

Is Laos a safe place for Western women when travelling alone? Are there any special safety precautions I must take?

Laos is generally speaking a very safe place to travel. There is a high respect for women in Lao society, and men and women are actually considered to be quite equal. That said, women should try to dress modestly, especially in the smaller towns, and don't walk around alone at night.
Best always!

That's good to know. I wouldn't go anywhere alone at night. Its too risky.

Looking back I was VERY fortunate. However, other than the occasional inappropriate pick up line, I never felt like being a woman got me in trouble. If you do plan on drinking all the basic rules apply. Watch your drink, don't get heavily intoxicated (at least not without a sober friend watching your back), and try not to walk around alone at night (I'd say that t men too!).
