Word of the day is Language.

language - phasaa - ພາສາ

Did you know that the Federal Service Indstitute (FSI) has categorized Lao as a category 4 on the Language Difficulty Ranking list. The categories go from 1 to 5 where 5 is most difficult to learn. It might not come as a surprise that Cantonese (Chinese) is a category 5 :) Check out the list over here.

The public holidays in Laos are New Year (January 1st), International Women's Day (March 8th), Lao New Year (April 14-16th, but some places of Laos celebrate even longer), International Labor Day (May 1st) and Lao National Day (December 2nd, where the republic of 1975 is celebrated).

Laos has a dry season (October - April) and a wet season (May to September). April to June are usually the hottest months of the year with temperatures reaching 40°C. Most tourists visit Laos between November and February where temperatures average 25°C in most parts of the country.

Let's expand our vocabulary with a new word: Thief.

thief - kee luck - ຂີ້ລັກ

Should you worry about thieves in Laos? Well, generally speaking most of Laos (and Asia for that matter) is very safe to travel in, but you should watch out for snatch theft and pick-pocketing. It might also be interesting to learn that around 83% of the Lao population believe crime has been increasing over the past 3 years (source: NationMaster).

Word of the day is Doctor.

doctor - moo - ໝໍ

The m"oo" in is like in the english m"o"re - just longer.

Should you need to see a doctor during your stay in Laos consider an international clinic like the French Medical Centre (in Vientiane). If your condition is of a more serious kind, Thailand is probably the safer choice.

Today's word is Game.

game - gem - ເກມ

Did you know that Laos has participated in 8 Olympic games to date? But unfortunately they are yet to win their first Olympic medal.

Word of the day is Chicken.

chicken - kai - ໄກ່

Did you know that in the Lao alphabet each consonant is linked to a word that starts with that particular letter. The first consontant in the alphabet -ກ (gor) for example, starts with and is linked to ໄກ່ (kai - which means chicken), and the full name of the consonant is therefore referred to as ກ ໄກ່ (gor kai).

Word of the day is Driving License.

driving license - bai-khap-khii - ໃບຂັບຂີ່

If you happen to be from Cambodia, China, Vietnam or Thailand you are allowed to drive a car in Laos, if your license is translated into English. If you are not from any of these countries you may obtain either a temporary license (for expats only) or international driving license (issued from your home country). You should always check with the authorities and insurance company though, to make sure you comply with current laws ;)

Word of the day is Beer.

beer - bia - ເບຍ

The local beer in Laos is called Beerlao and is based on rice. With a 99% market share, it is without a doubt "the beer" for the locals ;) It has been awarded several times by Monde Selection (a Belgian consumer test institute), and will probably set you back with just around $1. As Beerlao is exported to countries all over there world, there is a good chance you'll spot it in your supermarket one day.

$1 for 750ml, or was it 640ml. :D $2.5cdn for 330ml here in Canada, and it taste different, even with ice. Not so smooth and more bitter. :(
