Struggling with the tones

Postby gladstone » Mon Feb 16, 2015 7:36 pm

Learning Lao is really enjoyable and fun but also frustrating at times. I feel like I'm slowly building up my vocabulary and overall listening skills, which is great. I can even read a little now. Yeah! But the thing that constantly comes back to hunt me is the tones :| I have a hard time telling the difference between the 6 tones, and even more pronouncing them. They kind of all sound the same to me (more or less) Anyone out there who has a tip or two on how to deal with this?

Sába̖ai-di̖i Gladstone

My recommendation is that you expose yourself to the language on a daily basis by just listening to people speaking Lao. Tune in to podcasts, tv shows, lakorns or whatever you can find. Nevermind that you don't understand; what's important is that you train your ear to the Lao lingo, and slowly but surely you will be able to differentiate the various tones. It takes a lot of patience though. Expect to spend 500+ hours just listening.

Let me know how it goes ;)
