Cake and desert in Laos?

Postby jones » Mon Sep 21, 2015 12:59 pm

Hello

Thought I'd like to ask a question regarding food deserts. What I'd like to know is, what kind of cake and desert do ordinary Lao people eat?

I figure it's not cheese cake and cupcakes as in UK ;)

Cakes in Laos (and South East Asian in general) are very different from cakes and sweets in the western world. In Laos, cakes are almost always based on fruits and vegetables such as corn, banana, papaya and mango, in one way or the other. Steamed rice as well as alcohol (whisky) is also a frequent ingredient in Lao cake.

Here is a video, where the cook shows how steamed sticky rice cakes with banana are made:

I think most falangs will like these sweet coconut cakes. But they are probably not unique to Laos (I think you can get them all over SE Asia).

The perfect desert in my opinion.
