Visa on arrival when entering Laos by train

Postby javelin92 » Wed Oct 15, 2014 8:18 am

There is a train operating between Nong Khai in Thailand and a train station near Vientiane. What I would like to know is whether I can get a visa on arrival if I enter Laos by this train?

Coming from Nong Khai you will get a visa on arrival when you reach the Thanaleng train station in Laos (which is located about 15 km from Vientiane). The visa will cost you around $35.

Here is a good link with more info on taking the train from Thailand to Laos (scroll down to the second half of the page): http://www.seat61.com/Laos.htm.

About the Visa on arrival, I just want to add that travellers holding passports from the below list of countries are not eligible:

Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Jordan, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Mozambique, Nauru, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Syria, Swaziland, Tonga, Turkey, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

If your passport is from one of the above 29 countries, you will have to visit an embassy before entering Laos :-)

You can always find an updated list of which countries are eligible for visa on arrival (and which are not) over here: http://www.tourismlaos.org/show.php?Cont_ID=348.

Have a safe trip!
